Cragsters: Meet the Offwidthionado

By Adam Nawrot ,

Presenting Cragsters, a series of illustrations and descriptions by Adam Nawrot of climber-types. Cut ’em out, collect ’em, laugh, cry, or rage—just remember, don’t judge, because we’ve all been one type of Cragster or another.

The Offwidthionado.

It’s not clear whether the Offwidthionado is drawn to wide cracks because of masochistic tendencies or because she thinks that engaging in a discipline that’s universally agreed-upon as heinous makes her seem unique … or something. Either way, her readiness to wriggle between opposing sandpaper walls is concerning—you might even call it a “dark art,” requiring the practitioner to grovel, thrutch, and shed more blood than Satanists at a goat sacrifice. When not at the crag, the Offwidthionado can be found suspended upside-down, practicing inversions and “Leavittation” on plywood torture devices in her basement “Crack Den.” To preserve precious skin, Offwidthionados will wear tape gloves, kneepads, high-top shoes, and work pants. If these curious accessories don’t already make her stand out, her collection of comically large cams and industrial-strength metal tubes that every touron in the parking lot is inquiring about surely will.
