Adidas Rockstars is an invitational bouldering comp that draws the biggest names in our sport. This year’s event will take place in Stuttgart’s Porsche Arena in Germany on September 21-22.
Over 70 athletes from more than 20 different countries were invited this year, leading to a stacked roster that includes:
- Alex Puccio (USA)
- Miho Nonaka (JPN)
- Jernej Kruder (SLO)
- Janja Garnbret (SLO)
- Jongwon Chon (KOR)
- Petra Klingler (SUI)
- Staša Gejo (SRB)
- Jan Hojer (GER)
- Sean McColl (CAN)
Qualifiers take place Friday, followed by Sem-Finals saturday, and then a unique Finals round for the top six competitors. The finalists first climb on two boulders, one after another. Then the top three advance to the next round, in which they compete on a third boulder problem to reach the Superfinal. In the Superfinal, the top two compete in direct head-to-head on a “super boulder.” They climb simultaneously on identical problems on two sides of the same boulder. As it is custom when bouldering outdoors on natural rock, the athletes must stand on top of the boulder block and touch a buzzer, which will determine the winner. Although the climbers cannot see each other, the beat of the music and the cheers of the crowd will reflect what is happening on the other side. The first person to stand on top of the boulder and hit the buzzer person is named the Adidas Rockstar 2018 and wins 4,000 Euros (~$4,700 USD).
