The Mountain Equipment Aerofoil Jacket.

It’s tricky to prep for a sunny winter day in the alpine, with wild fluctuations in temperature as well as your exertion level. It’s key, then, to have a light, breathable outer shell to layer on or off as needed. Weighing only 3.5 oz, the Aerofoil is tissue-light and takes up minimal space in the pack—stuffed into its chest pocket, it’s the size of a pint of ice cream. “The super-breathable Exolite 45 stretch double-weave fabric kept me from getting that usual clammy feeling soft shells give, like you’re living in your own vapor/moisture,” raved our tester. During long belays, it was the perfect outer layer to keep wind and spindrift at bay. MSRP: $130
