The Petzl Swift RL Headlamp.

The rechargeable Swift RL is seriously bright at 900 lumens, remarkable for a standard-sized headband lamp weighing only 3.5 oz and that’s easy to wear with a helmet, especially compared to its bulkier high-output peers with their straps and big battery packs. On the rock, 900 lumens is more than necessary, but our tester appreciated the versatility—the Swift RL provided enough light for night ski descents and illuminated approaches, aiding with route-finding. While settings allow this to be dimmed to conserve batteries or when your face is one foot from the wall, Petzl’s Reactive Lighting technology handled things automatically in most situations, choosing the correct brightness on the fly without any user input. MSRP: $120
