Five Ten Guide Tennie Approach Shoe Rock Climbing Running Scrambling

The Five Ten Guide Tennie approach shoe

Five Ten has relaunched their classic Guide Tennie. I tested during the late-fall/early-winter season around Boulder, on steep, snow-dusted slogs in Boulder Canyon, the trails of Eldorado, etc. The shoes are grippy, reliable, and comfortable—notably so, thanks to a wide, padded cuff and supple suede uppers. They smeared and scrambled great thanks to the dot-matrix Stealth sole, had a high, rounded toe rand good for wide cracks, and were reasonably supportive for flat-footed hiking thanks to the compression-molded EVA midsole. They’re also very light: 1 lb, 10 oz for men’s size 9, and 1 lb, 6 oz for the women’s. For a soft, minimalist approach/guiding shoe, you can’t do much better.

$120, adidasoutdoor.com (men's | women's)
