Ice climbing has enough hazards without considering those razor-sharp screws in your pack. Throw in rust from the screws overnighting in said pack, and it’s tetanus time. The Thread Bed, a roll-up ice-screw holder, comes to the rescue with 10 mono-mesh sleeves for easy drying. One slot holds a 22-centimeter screw, while the other nine accommodate 10- to 19-centimeter screws. The design—a shock cord keeps the burrito closed—made for easy packing, with enough burliness in the 840 TPU nylon and mesh sleeves to keep the screws from shredding my pack during frequent trips to Lake Willoughby last season. With a simple release of the shock cord, my quiver unrolled dry and rust free at the cliff. Alas, this is where the Thread Bed presented one shortcoming: While 10 screws are fine for cragging, you’ll be a bit undergunned on multi-pitch climbs—except for those thrill-seekers who like to run it out. The simple solution is to buy two Thread Beds, but their durability comes with some weight—0.4 pounds—meaning darn near a pound per pair.
