Review: Metolius Recon Crashpad

None
The Metolius Recon crashpad.

Navigating between bushes in Roy, New Mexico, with an old pad, I found myself stuck between branches. I could have carried a smaller pad, but then I’d have lost precious coverage. The ingenious Metolius Recon solves the carry vs. coverage dilemma with a pad that opens to 42” x 60” x 4” and folds to 42” x 22” x 13”. The Oregon-based company used angle-cut hinges to create a narrow trifold pad that easily navigates funky terrain. A large external pocket on the closure flap provides an excellent place to store keys and snacks. The aluminum buckles are easy to use, making folding and moving the pad, with its plush shoulder straps and dual set of handles on each side, casual.
