A new award could provide big bucks to a climber who benefits the mountain world through his or her experiences. Nominations are now being accepted for the Rowell Award for the Art of Adventure, created in honor of the late Galen and Barbara Rowell. The Rowells were killed in August 2002 when their small plane crashed near Bishop, California. The brand-new, $15,000 cash award will honor a single adventurer “whose artistic passion illuminates the wild places of the world, and whose accomplishments significantly benefit both the environment and the people who inhabit these lands.” Nominations will be accepted until Jan. 17 for the Rowell Award, which will be presented May 4 at a ceremony in San Francisco.
