September 30, 2006 - It is a long-standing tradition here at Climbing to aid in keeping Rifle Mountain Park clean for climbers and our combined public perception. Every year at the end of September we host the annual Rifle clean-up, during which climbers are invited to help clean the park and later enjoy a BBQ and party courtesy of Climbing. In the past the clean-up has consisted of picking up trash and pulling weeds. This year we had bigger plans!
We chose three major projects to improve the canyon. One project was to build a new belay platform and steps to reduce erosion at the popular Potato Wall. Another group installed steps at the 80ft of Meat Wall. The final project was to install steps and clean the new routes at the Canine Wall (across from Feline) which includes two 5.8’s, one 5.9, and four 5.10s. Climbing has bolted and cleaned this wall to increase the number of moderate routes at Rifle. These routes also allow other climbers to equip new hard projects in accordance with the new bolting permit system which calls for the bolting of moderate routes in exchange for the bolting of harder routes.
In addition to these projects, climbers cleared brush from trails, collected trash and brushed holds around the canyon. The day ended with another rowdy BBQ and party mixed by Underground Chuck.
Thanks to all of the volunteers and sponsors who made this weekend a success. We hope to see you next year to tackle more projects and help keep Rifle accessible to climbers for years to come!
