5/6/10 - The only endurance climbing festival in the West, 24 Hours of Gunnison Glory, will take place over Memorial Day weekend this year in Gunnison, Colorado.
The concept for the event is simple: form a team (two to six people) and climb as many routes and boulder problems as possible in the 24-hour time period. There is also a 12-hour category for youth. There is an emphasis on camaraderie over competition at Gunnison Glory, though prizes will be awarded to the top individuals. There will also be a golden ticket raffle, giving every participant an equal chance at prizes.
It will take place at Hartman Rocks, an area reminiscent of Joshua Tree, California. Hartmans, as locals refer to it, has over 200 sport routes, a handful of traditional climbs, several mixed climbs (bolts and gear), and hundreds of boulder problems.
Climbing will start at 10:00 a.m. at Hartmans on Saturday, May 29, and go until Sunday, May 20. Registration is $30 per person. An awards ceremony and after-party will follow at the Sugahs Café and I.O.F.F. park in downtown Gunnison.
Climbing presentations in Gunnison will precede the event. This year, Chris Linder, professional climber and Gunnison local, and Chad Butrick of Paradox Sports will present. Paradox Sports is an adaptive sports organization that empowers the disabled communitys pursuit of outdoor sports.
A variety of entertainment is planned to happen during the competition including acoustic music, a nature awareness workshop for youth, yoga, yoga slacklining, and chair massages.
There are more than 40 sponsors for the event, including the City of Gunnison, the Peaceful Warriors youth climbing team, Western State College of Colorado, Evolv Sports, and Rock N Roll Sports. The event is organized by Alec Solimeo, local climbing activist and Peaceful Warriors director.
24 Hours of Gunnison Glory is being held in conjunction with the Sageburner, trail running race and the Original Growler mountain bike race, making for one of the most happening and energetic weekends of recreation in Gunnison.
