5.13 Offwidth Bouldering at Vedauwoo

In early November, before winter’s arctic chill descended upon Wyoming, Justin Edl completed his hardest offwidth problem yet among the huge granite boulders of Vedauwoo: Monsters Incorporated (5.13 or V8-). The undulating, 40-foot roof problem is a splitter with a 20-foot crux that “pinches to hands and then spits you up into another wide cruxy section,” according to Edl’s post describing the new climb on mountainproject.com. The route joins an existing problem, Big Hands Little Stitches (V6), for its last 10 feet.

Edl, who lives just down the highway from Vedauwoo in Laramie, has established a number of hard offwidths recently, usually without a rope, including Eight Ounces to Freedom (5.13-). He wrote on Mountain Project, “Though [Monsters Incorporated]doesn’t sport any moves as hard as Eight Ounces to Freedom, endurance over the distance proves the overall crux.”
