Ultra-light, high-fill down sleeping bags have made backcountry life warmer and cushier in recent years, and Stoic’s new Somnus line is an excellent addition to the mix. I tested the STOIC SOMNUS 30 ($269, stoicgear.com), which is ideal for below-treeline alpine excursions during the summer or hut-based ski trips in the winter months. The Somnus mummy has 11 ounces of 800-fill down and a Pertex waterproofbreathable shell, and it weighs just 1 lb. 12 oz. in size long, with the included compression stuff sack (a nice touch in itself). A distinguishing feature is the weight- and warmth-saving half-zip built into the top center of the bag. This zipper is a cinch to reach in the middle of the night, though the zip pull and draw-string toggles sometimes got in my face. A zipped foot-box compartment keeps a water bottle or gloves warm overnight. All in all, a good bag at a fair price. —Dougald MacDonald
