Dinner with Yvon Chouinard

Get access to everything we publish when you sign up for Outside+.

Claim a seat with CLIMBING and BACKPACKER editors for a very special evening benefiting the American Alpine Club. Act now—before the event sells out!

Fifty years ago, Yvon Chouinard pioneered a bold new style of rock climbing that ushered in not only new techniques and gear, but also a spirit of minimalism that today informs the environmental and business ethics of Patagonia, his legendary clothing company.

On February 8, 2014, the American Alpine Club will honor Chouinard at its exclusive annual dinner in Denver, along with Steve House, James Balog, Madeleine Sorkin, and other award recipients. Well-known mountain athletes and outdoor industry luminaries gather at this storied event; you’ll rub elbows with Tommy Caldwell, Lynn Hill, gear designers from Colorado’s outdoor companies, and Everest legends like Tom Hornbein. Proceeds from the event benefit the AAC’s work to increase diversity and participation in mountaineering and protect the landscapes we love.

CLIMBING and BACKPACKER magazine staff will be there, and we invite you to join our table to hear the always spellbinding, always thought-provoking Chouinard speak. There’s good wine to drink, a four-course gourmet meal, and stories to swap around the table with editors Jonathan Dorn and Shannon Davis.

There are two ways to claim a seat with us:

Contribute: Purchasing an individual ticket is the only way to guarantee your spot at the dinner, which usually sells out by mid-January. The non-member price of $250 is a great deal: It includes the dinner and a one-year AAC membership, an $80 value that includes adventure insurance from Global Rescue and great discounts on gear and guiding from Patagonia, Mountain Gear, and others. Youth tickets are only $125. To secure a seat, go to or call (303) 384-0110, and ask to be seated with CLIMBING and BACKPACKER.

Win: We will select one reader to receive a free seat at our table! Here’s how to enter: By December 31, 2013, send an email to with your name, age, hometown, and a short essay demonstrating your passion for the mountains. Have you explored widely? Are you just getting started? Have you taught climbing to disadvantaged kids? Overcome a challenge yourself? Can you demonstrate how you’re sharing your love of the outdoors with others? Persuade us, and we’ll treat you!
