Horse Pens 40 Bouldering, Including the boulderfields of Moss Rock Preserve and Palisades Park, is the first high-quality, color, photo-topo style guidebook available for purchase in the Southeastern United States. It is a modern guidebook in every sense of the word, complete with a color-coded grading system, color photographs of boulder faces with problems drawn in, color aerial topos for cross referencing, recommended problems lists, and tick lists. It also includes introductory and historical essays by bouldering pioneers and local luminaries such as John Sherman, John Gill, Adam Henry, Jacob Slaney, Luis Rodriguez, Bob Cormany, Brad McLeod, Lee Payne, and Mike Schultz. Extra motivation is provided by top-notch color action photographs by professionals such as Jeff Wales, Stephan Denys, Andrew Kornylak, Dan Lubbers, Dan Brayack, Chris Luker, Jamie Emerson, John Barr, Cooper Roberts, Craig Stevens, Brian Runnells, and Bart van Raaij. It is the first comprehensive guidebook to the bouldering of one of the country’s finest bouldering meccas, and also includes local spots such as Moss Rock Preserve, in Birmingham, AL, and Palisades Park, outside Oneonta, AL.
Adam Henry is a Birmingham, AL, native who has spent the majority of his lifetime scouring the hills and valleys of Alabama looking for boulders to develop. He was one of the principal developers of Horse Pens 40, and helps climbers maintain a good relationship with the park, and many other bouldering and climbing locations in the Southeast. In order to give back to the climbing community, and to offer good stewardship of the bouldering areas in Alabama, he has started and maintains the Alabama Bouldering Fund, to which 20% of the proceeds of this guidebook are dedicated. He is also a 5th grade teacher and is a co-owner of First Avenue Rocks Climbing Gym in Birmingham.
Greener Grass Publishing is a new publishing company owned by Andy Wellman which plans to focus on outdoor recreational guidebooks, as well as other visual publishing projects. Wellman is an avid climber and boulderer who chose to start Greener Grass Publishing to express his own ideals about outdoor recreation, and also because he enjoys the creativity inherent in high-end quality publishing. He wants to acknowledge all of the companies who chose to advertise in Horse Pens 40 Bouldering, without whom this initial publishing project would not have been possible: Alabama Outdoors, Deadpoint Magazine, Escalade Climbing Gym, First Avenue Rocks, Five Ten, Friksn, Metolius, Mountain High Outfitters, Nicros, Organic Climbing, So Ill Holds, The Southeastern Climbers Coalition, and the Tennessee Bouldering Authority.
