(February 2008 — Carbondale, CO) The third annual HERA REI Black Diamond Ovarian Cancer Climb4Life with DC Metro climbing gyms Earth Treks and Sportrock takes place February 29- March 29,2008. This month-long event includes climbing, yoga, fund-raising benefits, and speakers, for both climbers and non-climbers, and aims to raise funding for ovarian cancer research. Last year’s event raised over $42,000.

“When we first began putting Climb4Life together,” says Rhonda Krafchin Outreach Specialist of REI,“ I never imagined it would be something so extraordinary.”

The event will kick off at REI Fairfax February 29, 7-9pm, where HERA founder, Sean Patrick, will join participants for the official meet-and-greet. Others slated to attend this opening include Johns Hopkins ovarian cancer research scientists—to discuss research updates from 2007, and renowned pro climbers: Black Diamond athlete Katie Brown, Sterling Rope athlete Whitney Boland, Prana’s Nate Gold and Evolv’s Eric Scully.

Participants will get the opportunity on March 1st at the Climber’s Festival at Sportrock Climbing Center, Sterling, VA, to take clinics from these well-known climbers. Those who have never climbed, but have always wanted to can take a pre-event clinic February 26th at REI Fairfax, and a learn-to-climb clinic at Sportrock, March 1st.

Erik Hörst author, climber, and speaker says, “The power of climbing is awesome…There is no better exercise than reaching down and pulling other people up.” Hörst will be give a talk and slideshow March 19th at 7pm at REI Rockville. It is free and open to the pubic.

Money raised at the Climb4Life goes to support the HERA OSB1 seed grant for early detection, better treatment, and prevention of ovarian cancer at Johns Hopkins. Cost: $30. Online registration:
