Italian Woman Climbs M10+/M11-

Italian Anna Torretta has repeated Tomahawk (M10+/M11-) at the Swiss crags of Kandersteg. Established in 2001 by Robert Jasper, Tomahawk links a 30-foot rock overhang to a fragile Grade 5 ice dagger. Torretta is only the second woman to have climbed the grade. German phenom Ines Papert made the first female ascent of the route last year.Torretta, 32, had previously climbed several M10 routes in Europe and soloed the classic 2,000-foot Polar Circus in the Canadian Rockies. Accomplished on rock as well as ice, she soloed the El Cap route Zodiac in October. Torretta is an industrial designer and alpine guide who founded Avventura Donna, the first alpine-climbing school for women in Europe.
