Named after a Karakoram massif, the LA SPORTIVA BATURA ($525, sportiva.com) — a colorful double boot with an integrated, zippered gaiter and inner lacing system — offers outstanding performance on technical ground, as it did for me in late-season (read: sub-zero) temperatures at 20,000 feet in Pakistan’s Hispar Glacier area. The Batura accommodates the standard strap-on and step-in crampon range and climbs as well as most single-layer ice/mixed footwear. Plus, the four-layer synthetic inner boot and two-layer outer provide warmth and water resistance, in a sleek and light (2lb 3oz per boot) package. Baturas are an excellent mountain boot, kicking ably through crag-style outings and multi-day climbs alike.
