The third and pinnacle event of the Triple Crown Bouldering Series concluded on December 5-6, 2008, on the world class sandstone boulders of The Stone Fort (aka Little Rock City) near Chattanooga, Tennessee.
Rising powerhouse Jimmy Webb secured the overall Men’s Open series win this year with victories at both HP40 and The Stone Fort. Webb, who recently relocated to Chattanooga, and flew back just for this comp from Hueco Tanks, TX, sent The Shield (V12), The Chattanoogan (V12) and a slew of other hard problems on Saturday.
Jeremy Walton of Knoxville, TN, also put on a strong performance at The Stone Fort finishing less than 1000 point behind Webb. North Carolinian Jon Glassberg (Hound Ears comp winner) captured second place overall with solid scores at all three events with Coloradoan Carlo Traversi following in third.
In the Women’s Open class the field was closely matched this year, but in the end, it was none other than the Queen of The Triple Crown Miss Kate McGinnis who claimed yet another victory at her local areas. Alex Johnson of Colorado won both Hound Ears and The Stone Fort comps, but due to a low scoring HP40 event came up second overall. Also from Colorado, Alex Puccio, who finished well at all three events, grabbed the third place spot.
Although the Triple Crown Bouldering Series is a competition, the spirit of the event is all about preserving Southeast climbing area access and nurturing relationships with landowners which in turn gives something back to everyone.
Efforts from the Southeast Climbers Coalition (SCC), the Carolina Climbers Coalition (CCC) and the Triple Crown Bouldering Series have raised thousands of dollars to buy climbing areas. $2,000 was paid towards the Asheboro, NC Lease; $1,000 was donated to Hound Ears, NC, Country Club; $5,000 was raised by Hound Ears raffles and donations; $2,170 was raised by Horse Pens raffles and donations; $1,100 was raised by Stone Fort raffles and donations; $1,500 was donated to the Friends of the Cumberland Trail (FCT) where more than 50 climbers became members of the FCT at the Stone Fort comp at $5 per membership; a donation of $1,730 was made by the Stone Fort proceeds for the purchase of Yellow Bluff a newly opened cliff that has been closed for over 20 years near Huntsville, AL to make a total of $5,000 during the entire Triple Crown Bouldering Series. It should also be noted that the CCC donated $1,500 to the SCC that was earmarked for the Yellow Bluff mortgage.
Pivotal SCC player and steward for Southeast access Brad McLeod commented on this year’s series saying that, “We saw a shift as we raised money for Yellow Bluff Crag at record pace despite a recession and the holiday approaching. We are also seeing record numbers of volunteers joining in at trail days and cleanups like Little River Canyon, Boat Rock, Sand Rock and Sunset. Thanks to everyone who has done something along the way to push this boulder up that hill (no pun intended).”
The Hound Ears comp on October 4th was the first event in the 2008 Triple Crown Bouldering Series followed by Horse Pens 40 in Alabama on November 1st.
