12/6/12 – The 2012 La Sportiva Legends Only bouldering competition took place last weekend at the Klättercentret climbing gym in Stockholm, Sweden, showcasing five of the world’s top male competition climbers, with Sean McColl taking home the gold.
Five men—McColl, Dmitry Sharafutdinov, Jacob Shubert, Guillaume Glairon-Mondet, and Adam Ondra—battled it out in a unique competition format where the athletes spent a day to collectively project the five boulder problems before the actual competition. This allows the setters to create much harder problems than the usual onsight comp. According to Shauna Coxsey, the head routesetter and fellow competition badass, the five problems were graded V13 or V14. In an average World Cup bouldering competition, the problems usually don’t get much harder than V11 or V12.
While Ondra completed all five boulders last year, his mistakes at this year’s Legends Only comp landed him in a disappointing 5th place. McColl and Sharafutdinov were both able to complete four out of the five boulders. However, because McColl was able to send problem number five in fewer tries than Sharafutdinov, McColl took first place, leaving Sharafutdinov in his same second place finish as last year.
There will be another La Sportiva Legends Only competition for the female climbers in April 2013.
