2/4/14 - Adam Ondra has done the second ascent of First Round, First Minute at Margalef, Spain. The route was redpointed in April 2011 by Chris Sharma, and was featured in a Big Up video (see below). Although Sharma did not grade the route, Ondra said it was 9b (5.15b).
Ondra had tried the route at various times between 2011 and 2013, but this time he projected it, spending about a week in Margalef before redpointing. The route is only 25 moves long and intensely bouldery. "It's pretty short—or pretty long— it just depends on how long you manage to stay on!" Ondra told Planet Mountain. "It definitely felt like a route, with the crux at the very top. While the individual moves aren't that extreme —say 7C boulder at the top— having those 20 moves below obviously makes it feel a lot harder."
Ondra, who turns 21 on Wednesday, will be in Spain for one more week and then returns home to Czech to train. He plans to do all the lead climbing World Cup comps this season, as well as some Boulder World Cups.
Date of ascent: February 3, 2014
