Payne, Hume Take PCA Championship

Angela Payne took her second Professional Climbers Association (PCA) victory of the season, and David Hume won the first PCA comp he entered all year at the Season III Championships in Boulder, Colorado. With top female boulderers Lauren Lee, Lisa Rands and No. 2-ranked PCA climber Meagan Martin absent from the fray, only Alex Johnson gave Payne a serious run for the money at the Spot gym in Boulder. In the end, Payne, 19, claimed the championship and the overall season victory, adding to her American Bouldering Series season title for a tremendous year of competitive bouldering. In the men’s field, the dominant Canadian Nels Rosaasen, winner of all three prior PCA comps this season, didn’t make it to Boulder, leaving 14-year-old Daniel Woods and Hume to battle for the top spot. Hume, a physics student and Kentucky native, edged Woods by just a few points in the final. Women 1. Angela Payne 2. Alex Johnson 3. Lizzy Asher 4. Portia Menlove 5. Natasha Barnes 6.
