Though we tested these softshell pants ($129, backcountry.com) during the winter, we were rock climbing and hiking during a Colorado winter—meaning we found spring, summer, and fall conditions throughout the season at lower elevations. In rough terrain, rough rock, and rough weather, the Overhang Pants performed admirably: They shed light rain, fit loosely but comfortably (the cut and stretchy fabric are less snug than with some Stoic clothing), fit well under a harness, and held up to abrasive limestone and repeated washing. We liked the zipped cargo pocket on the right leg (accessible under a harness), but could have done without the two rear pockets. Three colors, four sizes, men's only. Available only online.
