9/20/11 - Rifle, Colorado, saw its first female 5.14b ascent last Saturday by local Jen Vennon, when she climbed Stockboy's Revenge at the Bauhaus. The route was originally climbed in 2005 by Andy Raether and estimated at 5.14c, but repeat ascents (Joe Kinder, Jon Cardwell, Justen Sjong, Sam Elias, etc.) have settled the grade at 5.14b.
Kinder, also no stranger to Rifle, said, "I am very impressed with this kind of action. That route is hardly a "girly" route and full of gnarly feature climbing and is thoroughly one of my favorite routes in Rifle. It is the representation of oddity climbing with knees, bizarre features, and contortion."
Vennon, a kindergarten teacher, climbed 7 PM Show (5.14a) last October. Other woman have climbed 5.14 in Rifle, including Emily Harrington's first female ascent of 7 PM Show in 2006, and Paige Claassen's ascent of Zulu (5.14a) in 2009, but Vennon has snagged the first 5.14b ascent. Earlier this summer, Vennon climbed Huge (5.13d), and has also repeated Living in Fear and Simply Read (both 5.13d).
Stockboy's Revenge starts on its neighbor, Gomorrah (5.13d), then diverges into its own 90-foot line.
Below is Jon Cardwell's third ascent of Stockboy's Revenge.
Date of ascent: September 17, 2011
