Students from Westminster, University of Utah, Weber State University and Utah State University compete to be the top college climberSALT LAKE CITY Students from four campuses across the state will compete for prizes and the title of “best boulderer” during Westminster’s first-ever intercollegiate climbing wall competition on November 18. Teams of up to 12 students from Westminster College, Utah State University, Weber State University and the University of Utah will climb against each other for a chance at the top honors, as well as a pair of Mad Rock climbing shoes. A winner will be selected in both the men’s and women’s divisions. Marvin Seale, Westminster’s director of fitness, wellness and recreation, explained that climbers will compete on the college’s 46-foot climbing wall, and the style being judged will be bouldering an un-roped ascent which will finish at around the 15-foot mark. During the qualifying round, competitors will try to accumulate the highest point total they can, with values based on difficulty and fewest falls, not speed. The highest scoring climbers will then proceed to the finals where they will have to navigate new, more challenging routes. “We are really excited to host this first-ever climbing competition,” said Liz Rogers, director of Westminster’s outdoor recreation program. “We are hoping that this will create camaraderie between the schools and set a path for future intercollegiate climbs.” Media interested in covering the first-ever competition can contact Krista DeAngelis at (801) 505-3213. The event will take place in the Dolores Dore Eccles Health, Wellness, and Athletic Center from 6 to 10 p.m. on Nov. 18, 2008.Westminster is a nationally recognized, comprehensive liberal arts college.
