Backers of a Yosemite climbing museum are urging other climbers to let the National Park Service know whether they want the museum and an expansion of the historic climber’s campground, Camp 4. The museum is close to becoming reality, but the plans aren’t final. The latest word is the museum will be bigger than anyone expected. Climbers originally hoped for wall space in Yosemite Lodge. Now the park service plans to construct a building just for the museum and possibly to provide a place for climbers to get out of the rain and cold. The park service also may nearly double the number of Camp 4 sites, install showers and build a covered cooking and eating area. Museum backers say input is crucial at this stage, and that letters seem to carry more weight than emails. Climbers can comment until a one-month public comment period ends October 9. Letters can be sent to P.O. Box 577, Yosemite, California, 95389, or send an email to Yose_planning@nps.gov
