The U.S. and Canadian teams put three young climbers on the podium at the Youth World Championships in Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria, last weekend. Canadian Sean McColl won the age 16-17 boys category in difficulty, beating Anthony Sapey of Switzerland and Romain Pagnoux of France. Kyle McCabe of the U.S. won the age 14-15 boys speed-climbing event, overcoming a strong push from three Ukrainian speed-climbing specialists. Daniel Woods of the U.S., who climbed a 5.14 in Rifle, Colorado, at age 13 this summer, finished second in the boys 14-15 category, behind Fabien Comina of France. Among the girls, the highest-placed finisher was Michael Ann McGinley of the U.S., who was sixth in the age 18-19 speed-climbing contest. American Alex Johnson was first going into the finals among age 14-15 girls, but slipped to seventh in the final round. Canadian Sarah Austin finished 10th among age 18-19 girls.
