EBs (left) the standard wear in the 1970 and early 1980s weren't shaped for rock climbing, they were build on men's dress-shoe lasts. You had to fit them painfully tight to get them to work. Modern shoes (right) are shaped more like human feet, and you can size them a bit more on the comfortable side.
