I have had periods of long layoffs from climbing, times when my health didn’t permit me to be at the rocks. An important part of getting through those dark days (I mean, let’s face it, a life without climbing is just not the same…) has been yoga, which has both kept me fit and helped my body heal. I’ve also come to realize that yoga is great cross-training for climbing, and even when I’m climbing a lot I keep up a daily practice. Tons of other climbers, like the legendary Boone Speed, swear by it, too: Yoga is great for flexibility, strength, muscle tone, balance, and centering. It has given me a much keener kinesthetic awareness of my body that I can apply on the rock.
One of the great benefits of an Outside+ membership is that you can, for only $1.52 a week, get a print subscription to Climbing and Outside, but also create a custom feed of articles, per your interests, across other brands in the Outside, Inc., family. For me, one of those is Yoga Journal, a title near-and-dear to my heart: I worked there for a handful of years and actually got my yoga-teacher training through the magazine. The title also offers the best yoga content you can find: amazing, on-point sequences and examinations of the asanas from the best teachers in the world.
And so, as I’ve kept up with my practice, I’ve been excited to use my Outside+ access to stay up-to-date with yoga and the yoga scene. Of course, you can customize your feed however you want. Maybe mountain biking on rest days from climbing is your thing, or backpacking with the family. Whatever the case, signing up for Outside+ is a sure bet for accessing the best outdoor-sports and lifestyle content around.
