Aaron Mulkey: In Search of Deep Water Dry Tooling

Watch Aaron Mulkey, Josh Wagner, and Laura Chimielewski establish “Deep Water Dry-tooling” routes on the usually unclimbable walls surrounding Lake Powell, Utah.

“I want everyone to know, the walls being climbed are typically under water and the rock is very weak sandstone since it’s usually under water. When the damn was built it filled up over 2000 miles of canyon walls with water. Because these walls are typically underwater the algae growth on the surface of the rock makes it nearly impossible to climb with your hands. Each time these walls go under water they shed rock and grow more algae. The rock above water line is much better and we do not climb on those with tools.”
