Ikigai: A Short Climbing Documentary Promoting Diversity and Environmental Awareness

Get access to everything we publish when you sign up for Outside+.

Early in the documentary, filmmaker Lucius Williams IV states: “The reason I created this video, is to open a dialogue to inspire and encourage Black and brown people, regardless of age and gender. Outdoor exploration can be an enlightening learning experience that isn’t exclusive to any given demographic.”

A climber of 30 years, Ikigai shares the story of how Williams found climbing, provides a glimpse into his passion for the sport, and contemplates the lack of diversity within the climbing community. As the film concludes: “Having access to the outdoors and communing with nature is for everyone, and should be available to enjoy by all.”
