Briton James Pearson made the third ascent of Elder Statesmen at Curbar in the U.K.’s Peak District in February. The British grade is HXS 7a, which roughly translates to a safe and protected 5.14. “Elder Statesman was a fantastic route, if a little disjointed,” Pearson says. “It’s a great test of precision, technique, and coordination, in a wild and exposed position. Safe enough not to have to worry, but bold enough to give your mind the edge and make you pull that little bit more.” Steve McClure made the first ascent, followed by Steve Dunning for the second.
