Didier Berthod is a crack climbing legend and was an inspiration to us and many back in the early 2000s. Most will remember him from the famous film “First Ascent,” where he makes the FA of Greenspit on trad gear (a previously bolted steep roof crack in Orco Valley) and goes for the the FA of Cobra Crack with Sonnie Trotter in Squamish.
Shortly after the film “First Ascent,”Didier joined a monastery and quit climbing. No one heard from him for 13 years and to us and a lot of others he remained a climbing mystery that we could only watch on screen, idolize and aspire to. Now Didier is back climbing and here at Wide Boyz we got the privilege of speaking to the legend himself to hear how the last 13 years have been, how his passion for climbing has been revitalized, and what the future holds. This is an iconic interview and not one to be missed!
A massive thanks must go to Didier of course for agreeing and chatting to us, but also to Fred Moix who put us in touch and also provided the images for the thumbnail. Thumbnail pictures are Didier on the FA of Greenspit in 2003, and a recent portrait in 2021. Thank you Didier and Fred, we look forward to seeing you both soon I hope 🙂 You can check out both Fred and Didier on Instagram: @fredmoix and @didier.berthod
