SET IN STONE is the latest release from multi award winning film makers Alastair Lee and David Halsted. The film charts the routes and philosophy of arguably the world’s best traditional rock climber; Dave Birkett. Over two decades he has achieved an unrivalled list of extreme ascents, predominantly in the high mountain crags of the Lake District. He follows in a tradition that spreads back in the Birkett family for 70 years. The film is embroiled with innovative camera work of the spectacular climbing and is expertly paced with plenty of humour.

Despite his status as one of the world’s great athletes, few people are aware of the enigmatic Birkett and his stunning exploits on his home crags in the beautiful Lake District. Set in Stone aims to change all that. The film features exciting and historically important footage guaranteed to set the pulses of climbing aficionados racing. In total nine of Birkett’s hardest routes are featured. They include the first ascent of Return of the King (E9 6c, F8a+), Dave’s latest addition to Scafell’s formidable East Buttress, as well as many other modern Lakeland test-pieces such as the extraordinary Nowt But a Flee’in Thing (E8 6c, F8a) on the esoteric Cam Crag. Other highlights include the legendary If Six was Nine (E9 6c, F8a+) on Iron Crag – a route which Birkett first climbed 14 years ago and which remains one the UK’s hardest climbing challenges; like many of Dave’s routes it has yet to see a repeat. In addition, Dave recounts the story of how he made the hardest traditional-style ‘on-sight’ ascent in the world on Dove Crag: the aptly-named Fear of Failure (E8 6c, F8a).
