The Glass Ceiling chronicles Pasang Lhamu Sherpa’s efforts in her fight for the right for Sherpa women to climb Everest, which was unheard of at the time because cultural norms dictated that women stay home and perform domestic duties. Although Pasang could not read or write, and was an ethnic and religious minority, she still had the courage to battle profound obstacles (including the government of her own country) in her fight for gender equality. She refused to back down, and in 1993, after three failed attempts, she made history and became a hero to her nation when she reached the summit of Everest and became the first female Sherpa to do so. Tragically, she did not survive the descent. April 22, 2018 marks the 25th anniversary of her death.

Pasang changed things for all women in her country and became a hero in Nepal (where she has a statue, roads, hospitals, schools and even a mountain named after her). She is proof that one person's courage and determination can impact an entire country.
