Mt. Saint Elias: A Sea to Summit Expedition

The south side of Mt. Saint Elias, located on the border of Alaska and Yukon Territory, has the longest vertical ski run in the world. From the ocean, this mountain shoots up to 18,008 feet. Janelle Smiley, Jed Porter, and Mark Smiley started from the ocean, climbed to the top, and skied about 13,000′ of the Harvard Route.

Check out the August issue of Climbing Magazine for a full feature about Mark and Janelle Smiley’s attempt to climb all of the 50 Classic Climbs of North America, and for an online Denali training course from Mark, visit howtodenali.com.
