An outdoor writer in Bozeman, Mont., has launched an effort to name a local peak after the late Alex Lowe. Terry Cunningham, a columnist for Explore! magazine, has proposed that Peak 10,031 in the Gallatin Range, south of Mount Blackmore, be renamed for Lowe, who died in 1999 in an avalanche on Shishapangma. Lowe was 40 at the time of his death. “Naming a peak after a mountaineer is a rarity, and Alex Lowe Peak would be a lasting legacy to Alex and his love of mountains and wild places,” said Jennifer Lowe, Alex’s widow, to the Bozeman Daily Chronicle. Lowe, a Bozeman resident, was one of America’s greatest all-around climbers during the 1980s and 1990s. The Bozeman City Commission and other organizations are lending their support to the proposal, which must be formally approved by the U.S. Board of Geographic Names.
