One of the famed towers above Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy, has toppled over due to melt-freeze erosion. Torre Trephor, the smallest of the towers at about 120 foot high, was off to one side of the main group. (Despite the name Cinque Torri, or Five Towers, about a dozen large pinnacles dot the high, grassy hillside at this landmark climbing destination.) The tower’s dramatic collapse eliminated half a dozen very popular 5.10 and 5.11 sport climbs. “It’s lucky it happened at this time of year when there’s still snow,” a Cortina tourism official.told news agencies. “If it had happened in August it could have been a tragedy.”
